As the end of the year approached, we embarked on a 12-day holiday blending nature, relaxation, and exploration. From the lush forests of Sai Yok National Park to the serene beaches of Chanthaburi and the tropical charm of Koh Chang, our trip was a mix of adventure and tranquility.
Sai Yok National Park: Natural Hot Springs and River Views
Our journey began west of Bangkok, in the peaceful Sai Yok National Park, just beyond Kanchanaburi. We stopped on the way in a huge Thai restaurant with great views and good food.
For three nights, we stayed at the HomePhutoey River Kwai Hotspring Resort, an idyllic retreat nestled on the edge of the Kwai River.
The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the resort itself. The best rooms—villas #1 and #3—featured private terraces overlooking the river and onsen-style hot baths for ultimate relaxation. The resort’s natural hot springs offered a rejuvenating experience, with a warm section at 37–38°C and a larger, cooler pool nearby, perfect for alternating between temperatures. The surrounding jungle and mountain views completed the experience.
During our stay, we took a serene one-hour boat trip along the Kwai River. Although there were no stops or commentary, the journey provided a peaceful glimpse of floating bungalows and riverbank scenery. We also visited a nearby Mon village, a 20-minute hike from the resort. The village was quiet yet charming, even featuring a friendly elephant.
A short drive from the resort, we visited the Hellfire Pass Interpretative Center, a deeply moving historical site that offered insight into the harsh realities of World War II.
Chanthaburi: Hidden Gems and Coastal Serenity
After celebrating New Year’s Eve back in Bangkok, we headed southeast to Chanthaburi for two nights. This quieter coastal region is perfect for those seeking a more relaxed escape during the bustling high season. We stayed at the Chao Lao Tosang Beach Hotel, a beachfront haven located on the pristine Chao Lao Beach.
The wide, straight beach was ideal for swimming, and the hotel’s beachfront bungalows offered unbeatable ocean views. The on-site beach restaurant made it easy to enjoy fresh seafood while soaking in the coastal ambiance.
As it’s name implies it’s on the Chao Lao Beach, the ocean front in Chanthaburi province. A nice beachfront hotel on a wide straight beach, there’s a beach restaurant. The resort has a swimming pool but the beach is anyway very nice for swimming. The beachfront bungalows are great, the view couldn’t be better.
One highlight of the area was the Khung Kraben Bay Aquarium. Though compact and somewhat weathered, the aquarium offered a fascinating glimpse into the Gulf of Thailand’s marine life and was completely free to visit.
Khung Kraben Bay Aquarium is a free aquarium located in Chanthaburi province, Thailand, near the scenic Khung Kraben Bay. It’s compact but well-curated and showcases the diverse marine life found in the Gulf of Thailand.
The facility features a variety of tanks housing colorful tropical fish, crustaceans, and other sea creatures. It’s not that well maintained but it’s free to visit and part of the Laem Sadet National Park on the southern part of the Khung Kraben Bay, which also includes mangroves forests and the Aquaculture Demonstration Unit.
Nearby, the Aquaculture Demonstration Unit provided another engaging experience, showcasing large fish swimming in bay waters and the mangrove ecosystem of Laem Sadet National Park.
A must see when passing by, this facility is dedicated to the research and development of sustainable aquaculture practices, particularly in the cultivation of marine species. Basically it’s a long pier with netted areas in the sea where different species of fish can be seen. You can buy some buckets of small fish to feed them and it’s quite impressive as you have huge groupers and some shark species that jump out to eat. It also explains how crabs are farmed and a squid oriented restaurant.
Koh Chang: Tropical Island Bliss
The final leg of our trip took us to Koh Chang, where we spent four nights at the Barali Beach Resort and Spa. Situated on Klong Prao Beach, this boutique-style resort was the perfect retreat, offering a peaceful contrast to the larger, busier resorts nearby.
Each room was a standalone villa, designed in traditional Thai style and surrounded by lush tropical gardens, ensuring privacy and serenity. The resort’s beachfront location made it easy to enjoy the island’s golden sands and calm waters.
A nice beachfront high end resort in a tropical garden, it’s right next to the Centara on Klong Prao Beach but its much smaller and boutique style, with only 40 rooms, so it’s a more tranquil escape in high season. Every room is a separated well-appointed Thai style villa surrounded by verdant gardens that ensure privacy and relaxation.
Reflections on a Relaxing Holiday
From the rejuvenating hot springs of Sai Yok to the hidden coastal gems of Chanthaburi and the laid-back charm of Koh Chang, this holiday was the perfect way to end the year. Each destination offered its own unique experiences, creating a balanced itinerary of relaxation and exploration. Whether it was soaking in natural hot springs, wandering through mangrove forests, or simply watching the sunset over the ocean, every moment felt like a step closer to nature.
If you’re looking for a mix of adventure, tranquility, and family-friendly experiences in Thailand, this route is a fantastic option to consider.
