Suan Luang Rama IX
Parks

Suan Luang Rama IX in Bangkok is a sprawling and serene park that honors the memory of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). This green oasis spans a vast area, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city life. Visitors can stroll through well-maintained gardens, enjoy the calming lakes, and appreciate the various attractions throughout the park, sometimes you have ancient culture festivals too. It’s a big park a bit outside of town towards Suwarnaphum.

The Rama 9 – which is the name of the previous king of Thailand – park offers visitors a variety of experiences. There are several gardens, including botanical gardens, a stunning Thai temple-like style pavillon surrounded by ponds, fountains.

The main white modern monument bordering the central lake in Suan Luang Rama IX is called the Ratchamangkala Pavilion. It is an iconic structure in the park, housing exhibitions on the life and projects of His Majesty the King.

Nature enthusiasts will love the Botanic Garden, which spans 150 rai and is home to a vast collection of plant species. It serves not only as a research and conservation hub but also as an educational resource with a library, greenhouses for ferns, orchids, and indoor plants and a lotus pond.

Though it’s usually crowded with people during the week-end, and joggers, you can of course encounter a bit of wildlife, lots of birds and some squirrels, and also some monitor lizards. Even some monitor lizard orgies.

The park’s large lawn also serves as a marketplace for ornamental plants during the annual Suan Luang Rama IX Flowers Festival, held every early December. Known as “Phanmai Ngam Aram Suan Luang Ror Kao” or the “Beautiful Flora at Suan Luang Rama IX Park,” this winter fair features stunning floral displays, cultural activities, and, of course – it’s Thailand -, plenty of food stalls.

For lunch before our visit of the park, we ate in a charming open-air restaurant located near a pond filled with fish. The restaurant serves authentic Thai and Isaan cuisine, and the peaceful, natural setting made it the perfect spot to enjoy a spicy meal before continuing our exploration of the park.
