Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage city in northern Laos, is an ideal destination for a 2- or 3-night weekend escape from Bangkok. Just a short two-hour flight away, this serene city offers a peaceful retreat from urban life. Upon arriving at its small airport, you’ll immediately notice that, despite being one of Laos’ most popular tourist spots and a former capital, Luang Prabang is relatively small compared to cities like Vientiane (the current capital, which is already much smaller than Bangkok).

Known for its well-preserved architecture, Luang Prabang beautifully combines French colonial charm with traditional Lao culture. Situated along the banks of the Mekong River—one of the largest rivers in Asia—and surrounded by the Nam Khan River, the city has a unique peninsula vibe.

We stayed at a lovely historic hotel that truly captured the essence of Luang Prabang with its bungalows set around lily ponds. Dining by the pond was a highlight, especially in the evening, and we highly recommend this experience.

Another great hotel option is Burasari Heritage, where you can enjoy a relaxing lunch in the shade of trees overlooking the river.

Along the tranquil banks of the Mekong River, a boutique hotel that blends the charm of traditional Lao architecture with modern comforts, with rooms designed with teak wood accents and Lao textiles. It’s located in the heart of Luang Prabang, it’s also a nice place to enjoy a meal at the hotel’s riverfront restaurant, which offers authentic Lao cuisine.

Luang Prabang is compact and can easily be explored on foot or by bicycle, which our hotel provided for us. We spent our days cycling through its quiet streets, stopping for coffee with scenic views, and watching the sunsets by the waterfront.

As a deeply Buddhist city, Luang Prabang is home to several stunning temples, with Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Mai Luang Prabang standing out as must-see sites. The former royal palace, Haw Kham, now serves as the national museum and is also worth a visit.

Phou Si Hill, located in the heart of the city, offers an easy climb with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area. It’s a great spot to take in the beauty of Luang Prabang from above.

One day, we ventured out of the city by renting a motorbike, which is the best way to explore the area—especially as a couple. Our destination was the Kuang Si Waterfalls, located 30 kilometers south of Luang Prabang, but the ride itself to get there is worth the trip. The falls are stunning, there are multiple pools at different levels where bathing is possible.
