Bang Kachao, affectionately known as Bangkok’s “Green Lung,” is a serene oasis nestled within the city’s vibrant surroundings. This lush peninsula, formed by a bend in the Chao Phraya River, offers a refreshing escape into nature just minutes away from the urban hustle. It’s actually quite incredible how such a place exists in the middle of Bangkok, I guess most people visiting the city miss it. This area has different construction laws and has been quite preserved from urbanisation, which makes it an incredible countryside area right in the middle of Bangkok. Nothing like a screenshot of Google Maps to show what it actually means, you really have a huge plot of greenery surrounded by a dense city and its millions of inhabitants :

Having visited Bang Kachao countless times (more than ten), I’ve found it to be the perfect spot for cycling adventures. My journey typically begins at Khlong Toei Wat (a temple just North of the peninsula, accessible from Rama 4 road), where I meet up with friends. From there, we cross the Chao Phraya River aboard a traditional long-tail boat. The short ride not only provides scenic views but also brings us directly to a local bicycle rental shop, where renting a bike costs just 100 THB for the day. It’s surprising to see the Bangkok skyline, you can even see the highest skyscraper, the Mahanakan Tower from a small wood boat, while going to the kind of countryside area that it would seem should only be found a hour drive from Bangkok.
Cycling through Bang Kachao is a unique experience. Elevated concrete pathways wind through local farm-like areas and tropical forests, above mangroves and canals, allowing us to pedal amidst lush greenery and tranquil surroundings. The absence of heavy traffic makes it an ideal place for casual rides.
A highlight of our route is the Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park and Botanical Garden. This expansive park is a haven for nature lovers, featuring serene lakes, diverse plant life, and shaded trails. It’s a place that’s particularly special to me and my wife—we chose it as the backdrop for our pre-wedding photos, capturing memories amidst its natural beauty.
A nice botanical garden in the middle of Bang Kachao, featuring a lake and green spaces for leisurely walks and picnics in a serene environment. The occasional monitor lizard floats around on the lake, the park is also a popular spot for birdwatching, especially during migratory seasons. The park offers a birdwatching tower in it’s foresty area.
Our cycling trips often culminate with a visit to the Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market. Here, we pause to enjoy a variety of local Thai dishes, fresh fruits, and traditional sweets. The market’s vibrant atmosphere, set along the waterways, offers an authentic glimpse into local life and cuisine. It’s not a “floating” market though, but I guess it used to be when local producers used to come here to sell goods from their boats.
A great place to experience authentic Thai culture, this floating market caters mostly to locals and Thai tourists. It has the usual stalls with local products, mostly food stalls but also a variety of others. It’s especially popular on weekends and during festivals.
Lately the area as seen more places open, cafes and restaurant, as well as a place where to rent kayaks.
Bang Kachao is one of Bangkok’s hidden gems—a green sanctuary that contrasts beautifully with the city’s energetic pace. Whether you’re an avid cyclist, a nature enthusiast, or someone looking to explore beyond the typical tourist spots, Bang Kachao provides a refreshing and rejuvenating experience that’s not to be missed.
